A new journey has started for me today. Today I have decide to take a more serious look at FreeBSD. In the past I have only toyed with FreeBSD, not putting a lot of effort into learning what makes this operating system stand out as an open source operating system.

As I continue to explore this operating system in-depth, I hope to publish a series of articles as I pick FreeBSD apart. Some of this information will be things that people already know, updated HowTo articles, and hopefully some new HowTo’s that are a more definitive source than some of the bits and pieces that are just found on Google.

Just a little background, my starting environment will be running <del>FreeBSD 9.0-RC3 64bit (released December 9, 2011)</del> FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE 64bit (released January 12, 2011) in a Virtual Machine (VM) using Oracle’s VirtualBox. This VM is a dual core machine with 2GB of memory, dual 80GB drives using ZFS, mirrored, and an Intel Pro 1000MT Desktop adapter.

If you’re anything like me, you have a tendency not to crack the manual open for what you’re working on. This was the case for me the first couple of times that I tried out FreeBSD. I am more of the IRC or search Google type for the answers that I was looking for. Quite often in #freebsd or in search results, I was invariably pointed to an answer that was in the FreeBSD Handbook.

I was at first a little put off by this. I started to think that FreeBSD users were nothing but a bunch of elitists that couldn’t be bothered helping someone that was new to this operating system. That opinion was soon changed when the answers were indeed in the Handbook.

I have found that the Handbook is very well maintained. While much of the documentation for FreeBSD 9.0 has not made it in there yet, the installation instructions have. Most of what is applicable for FreeBSD 7.4-RELEASE and FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE applies.

I think, nay, believe that the title of this post sums it up. Read the Handbook – you will thank me for it. You can find the FreeBSD Handbook at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/.

Until next time, Happy FreeBSD’ing!
